Kingsman holds top spot at weekend box office, but The Emoji Movie climbs back to second

Sony’s The Emoji Movie overtook Warner Bros’ horror film IT at the weekend box office, climbing back into second place with earnings of $2.185m.

The film, which ran across 359 screens has made $10.781m in total, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

But it wasn’t able to beat Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which held the top spot over the weekend, achieving $3.610m across 409 screens.

The second action spy comedy film of its series, stars Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Taron Egerton, Halle Berry, Elton John and Channing Tatum.

Since its premiere weekend, the film has made just short of $14m.

Meanwhile Fox’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie climbed from fifth to third over the weekend, making $1.600m while in the school holiday break.

It has now made a total of $7.32m.

Fourth was horror film IT, which made another $1.439m over the weekend. The film has made almost $22m in total since its premiere more than two weeks ago.

Fifth was sci-fi film Flatliners, collecting $1.222m on its premiere weekend at box office.

The Sony film tells the story of five medical students who embark on an experiment to gain insight into what lies beyond life.
