Kingsman: The Secret Service knocks American Sniper from top spot in weekend box office
Kingsman: The Secret Service has stormed the box office in its opening weekend, to push American Sniper out of the top spot.
The film, which is based on a comic book and tells the story of a super-secret spy organisation that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius, grabbed $3.12m across 370 screens.
American Sniper held onto second place after pulling in $1.944m across 308 screens, taking its total Aussie box office takings to $14.504m as The Theory of Everything was pushed into third place after failing to crack $1m in ticket sales this weekend.
The movie, a biopic about the life of academic Stephen Hawking starring Eddie Redmayne, made $964,930 across 232 screens taking its total local takings to $3.103m.
The Imitation Game came in at fourth place despite only pulling in $610,438 across 227 screens while Australian film Paper Planes grabbed fifth place after making $474,010 across 277 screens.
The film has made a total of $7.739m at the local box office.
Mark Wahlberg’s latest film The Gambler grabbed $401,856 in its opening weekend to secure sixth place.
Oscar best picture favourite Birdman pulled in $285,027 across 146 screens to take its local takings to $4.870m.
