Kogan boasts about hitting 200,000 Facebook fans before rivals
Discount electronics retailer Kogan has sent out a press release to announce that it has reached 200,000 Facebook fans before its competitors.
Kogan has 200,389 Facebook fans at the time of writing, just ahead of rival JB Hi-fi, which has 198,000, Harvey Norman, which has 140,000, Samsung on 50,000 and LG, which has 45,000.
The brand has one of the fastest growing Facebook communities in Australia, having added 32,880 fans in the last month, according to social media measurement service Socialbakers.
A Kogan spokesman told Mumbrella that the ability of customers to share their purchases via a confirmation page has helped the company grow its Facebook page quickly; Kogan reports record sales for the month of July.
Also, Facebook links are heavily featured in Kogan’s eDM template, which goes out to around 1m people.
Kogan does some paid Facebook marketing, but this is a minor part of the company’s strategy, a spokesman told Mumbrella.
The press alert also announced the launch of a new Facebook app that lets people vote for their favourite deal.
Kogan’s founder Ruslan Kogan said the brand’s popularity on the platform was partly down to its ability to “listen to feedback and engage their fans in true two-way dialogue.”
Kogan said: “Even in the early days of our Facebook community, we knew that listening to feedback and actioning it would help us grow. The initial response to these crowdsourced deals has been outstanding – with tens of thousands of votes pouring in over the weekend.
This publicity hound will send out a press release on just about anything, sadly there are a lot of media who will just lap this up, reheat it and serve it as ‘news’. And so effing what, if Kogan has more Facebook fans than Harveys, JBs, Samsung etc? Those are big brands who are always going to be well behind in the social stakes, Kogan plays in the social/direct space and so of course he will have the lead there, in the end through it counts for zip.

Good on you Kogan for reaching 100K fans but so what? Edge Rank in Facebook controls what amount of users see your content, without great management of a page what is a big number? There are many other pages with less fans but higher engagement. Why don’t you write a story on that Mumbrella?

They are also helped by the fact consumers are still wary of spending and will flock to discount brands. In any case, they achieved positive growth when retail is declining through a strong strategy, use of social plug-ins to all comms and an digitally integrated approach – they deserve to be congratulated for building a strong online community through WOM and social proof.

easy to get tens of thousands of likes from indonesia and the like. The real question is quality. I bet that majority of those likes are from overseas and represent a zero value to the business (other than purposes such as this obvious beating of chest attempt).

The numbers don’t matter. What matters is what otherwise great news organisations will do for a story. A press release for press release’s sake.
Smart SEO but not much else…
