Kylenomics

Welcome to a midweek update from Unmade.
Today: we examine whether the Kyle & Jackie O Show is worth $200m for the right media company, and the Unmade Index resumes its downwards march.
Time’s running out to enter Unmade’s REmade retail media awards. Entries close tomorrow; late entries, with an additional fee, will be accepted until next week.

The “Key Person Insurance” salespeople must be watching this one with bated breath.
Thanks Anthony!
An interesting posting Tim. Your comparison to other ‘big radio names’ was good.
But as I was reading I saw your comment that the seven year agreement for AFL games shared by Seven and Foxtel you pegged it at $40,000 per live minute. My intuition was that the $40k was too high, so I did some maths.
Each season has 22 rounds with 9 games = 198 games. And there are 9 Finals games = 207 games per annum, which is a total of 1,449 games over the seven years.
Each game has four quarters which would average around 30 minutes of ‘play’ (after including the time-out when the ball is not in play … no-one tunes out after a goal!). That means that each game has about 120 minutes of play, but when you add in the pre-match, the two quarters, half-time and a quick post-match the broadcast is typically 3 hours for both Seven and Foxtel.
For the 120 minutes of play over 1,449 games that accumulates to 173,880 minutes which across the $4.5b contract equates to $25,800 per minute. For the broadcaster’s 180 minute broadcast it equates to $17,250 per minute.
Given that Seven don’t play all nine games they may be up to $40k per minute, but for the combined Seven/Foxtel deal the AFL should be getting something like an overall average $17,250 per minute per match.
Cheers.

Thanks John – I’m relieved we disagree by such a relatively small number – I’d be more scared of having got my decimal point in the wrong place!
Excellent analysis Tim.
