Stats bureau invites public to Run That Town
Creative agency Leo Burnett Sydney have created a game for the The Australian Bureau of Statistics using census data.
Run That Town is a free simulation game for Apple products that gives the player the ability to plan any town in Australia. The game is narrated by Shaun Micallef.
Andy DiLallo, chief creative officer of Leo Burnett Sydney said in an announcement: “The response so far to Run That Town has been overwhelmingly positive. People are finding a game about statistics fun and surprisingly addictive. The great thing about this project is we’re not just telling people about the data – we’re giving them a chance to use it for themselves. It’s an innovative way to make those numbers really mean something to the people using them, and to get the community more involved in Census data.”

Very innovative idea for getting people engaged with complex data – which requires ever greater create solutions. Would have liked to have heard more about how they plan to promote the app.

Not sure if i have missed anything here but what is the point of this?
I can’t argue that it is an interesting use of data and will probably lead to a good amount of engagement, trouble is that i am failing to see why – apart from a good old fashioned why not?
