Leo Burnett Sydney first Aussie agency named on Cannes Lions 2022 shortlist

Leo Burnett Sydney has been named on the shortlist for the Innovation Lion, in the first batch of shortlists announced for the 2022 Cannes Lions festival.

The agency is the first Australian agency to be shortlisted for this year’s Cannes Lions, named in one of the first three awards shortlists released this morning, with a further 28 awards shortlists to be named ahead of the festival next week.

The agency was nominated for its ‘One House to Save Many’ campaign created for Suncorp Group in April 2021. The campaign was created in response to the devastation caused to Australian communities by increasingly prevalent natural disasters, partnering with housing resilience experts at James Cook University, the CSIRO and Room 11 Architects to design and test a prototype home that was fire, flood and cyclone-resistant.

A documentary following the story of the initiative was aired on Channel Nine with earned media as support.

The campaign has since been followed with a new project and campaign, Resilience Road, which saw five homes on the same street assessed and renovated implementing changes that would help protect the homes in the case of ever increasing climate disasters.

Commenting on the nomination, Leo Burnett executive creative director Andy Ferguson said:

“We are immensely proud of ‘One House’. And especially happy that it is being recognised in innovation categories. Innovation is such a buzzword in our industry, but it’s rare that we actually see it in practice. Because true innovation can take a lot of time, money, trust and bravery.

‘One House’ has shown that when you do innovate, it pays off in spades. The project is yielding significant business results for Suncorp, and has led to industry-leading insurance products like ‘Build it back better’. But even more importantly; off the back of the campaign The Insurance Council of Australia is aiming to embed resilience into the National Construction Code by 2025.

‘One House to Save Many’ was never about just building one house. It was about changing the way we build every house.”

The Innovation Lion awards category celebrates ‘ground-breaking innovation, technology and problem solving’ and will be overseen by jury president Cleve Gibbon, chief technology officer of Wunderman Thompson.
