Michod conquers directors' kingdom

David Michod has won the Australian Directors Guild Award for Best Direction – Feature Film for Animal Kingdom – and shared the Best Stand Alone Documentary with Jennifer Peedom for Solo.

This is a summary of our live Twitter coverage of the event, which took place on Thursday night in Sydney:

  1. Minister for the Arts Virginia Judge gives opening speech, talking about the state’s well known and publicised screen plans… such as AFI awards coming to Sydney, $25m extra funding, etc.
  2. Best Direction TVC: Tim Bullock, Nothing Soft Gets In (Toyota).
  3. Best Original Online Program: Clayton Jacobson, Mordy Koots.
  4. Best Cross-Platform Interactive Project: Marcus Gillezeau, Storm. That’s a new category this year.
  5. Best Music Clip: Craig Melville, The Bedroom Philosopher – Northcote. So hungover. That was the title, not a statement! Highly Commended to the only other music clip nominee, The Glue Society, The Bumblebeez – Misfit.
  6. Best Student Film: Ariel Kleiman, deeper than yesterday. Kleiman is not here tonight. The film screened at the syd film festival before Cane Toads 3d
  7. Best Short: Corrie Jones, Water
  8. DIrector Kriv Stenders presenting First Assistant Directors Award to Chris Webb. “I didn’t realize how f***ing famous he was,” says Stenders of when he started working with Webb on Red Dog. “Webb is an amazing ally. First ADs are the midwives that bring films to fruition… we had a tough shoot on Red Dog [….] I hope you’ll continue to be a good father to other directors and films.”
  9. Webb: “I thought the award was some sort of prank! I’m very humbled and a but chuffed as well”, “2nds and 3rds are the ones that make you look good, really […] My mother’s still hoping one day I’ll get a real job.”

  14. Best Documentary Feature: Gillian Armstrong, Love, Lust and Lies. Armstrong:”who just lost $20 at my table!? […] these films have perhaps more power than drama. I hope the ABC will let me make another one. Thank you to Screen NSW or whatever they call themselves these days.”
  15. Best Animation Program: Jean Camden, Dirtgirlworld
  16. Mark Wareham presenting excellence in tv drama production to Tony Tilse: “he’s a populist who only wants to entertain”
  17. Tilse: “key to directing is collaboration”
  18. Best Tv drama mini-series: Steve Jodrell, The Circuit series 2 ep1. Jodrell absent; sends message dedicating award to late DOP.
  19. Best TV drama serial: Jovita O’shaughnessy, neighbours ep 5861
  20. Best Comedy: Tony Roges, Wilfred series 2, ep 7
  21. Best TV reality/ light entertainment: Paul Drane, Rockwiz ep 101
  22. Best Tv children’s: Jeffrey Walker, Dance Academy
  23. Best tv drama series: Stuart McDonald, Tangle ep9
  24. Environmental category GRASS: Cate McQuillen, Dirtgirlworld
  25. Best Feature: David Michôd, Animal Kingdom. IF and AFI next? Michôd: I’m not gonna thank anyone by name. All cast and crew are invaluable .
