Local pizza chain goes viral with ‘Footy Pizzas’
An Australian pizza chain, Bubba Pizza, has gone viral online for its new range of ‘Footy Pizzas’, ahead of the AFL Grand Final.
The announcement:
As food inflation continues to challenge the consumer market, Australian-owned fast food chain Bubba Pizza is offering an innovative solution to a growing pain point throughout the footy season: the rising cost of stadium food.
With the AFL grand final approaching, the brand has introduced a new range of footy-themed pizzas co-designed by one of their own staff: 67-year-old local footy veteran and Bubba Pizza part-timer, Neil “Towners” Townley.
Towners, already a local legend through his popular “Prune Masters” Instagram and Tiktok, has turned his love of footy and food into a viral sensation with campaign videos reaching more than 2 million people (and counting).
His creative Meat Pie Pizza, Hot Dog Pizza, and Dim Sim Pizza are now available across all 17 Bubba Pizza locations, priced at just $10 — a sharp contrast to the steep prices inside stadiums.
Since launch, it’s been talked about by The TODAY Show, News.com.au, Dan Does Footy and more.
“Our goal is to bring back the fun of footy without the financial strain,” says Bubba Pizza’s Managing Director, Damian Hopper.
“As a family run business, we know the importance of affordability and providing real value to our customers. We’re also competing with much bigger players in the pizza industry, and that means we have to find unique ways to stand out.
“While the larger chains focus on volume, we’ve always leaned into creativity and community connection. Our footy pizzas are a perfect example of this—we’re offering something that resonates on both a local and cultural level while providing real value to our customers. It’s that personal touch and focus on customer sentiment that set us apart in a highly competitive market” says Hopper.
Bubba’s creations, which include iconic Australian flavours like beef mince and gravy for the Meat Pie Pizza and South Melbourne Market dim sims on the Dim Sim Pizza, have resonated particularly well with Bubba’s loyal customer base, reinforcing the brand’s connection to Australian culture.
What’s also interesting is how Bubba Pizza has elevated one of their own team members into the spotlight. Towners’ authenticity and Aussie larrikin personality make him a key part of the Bubba brand story, resonating with Aussies nationwide.
