Maddison Connaughton finishes up as editor of The Saturday Paper

Maddison Connaughton has called time on stint as editor of Schwartz Media’s The Saturday Paper .

Schwartz Media have said that editor-in-chief Erik Jensen will take on Connaughton’s responsibilities “for the foreseeable future”. Connaughton and Schwartz Media declined to comment on Connaughton’s next role when contacted by Mumbrella.

Connaughton has edited the paper for three years, joining in July 2018 from Vice Media where she held the role of features editor.

“It’s been an honour to edit the paper,” said Connaughton. “The Saturday Paper is one of the brightest voices in Australian media and I have been happy to see it thrive under my editorship. After three years, it’s the right time to move on.”

During her time as editor, the paper has seen considerable growth, in addition to other Schwartz Media titles, including the 7am podcast which now consistently ranks in the five most downloaded podcasts monthly in Australia, and is the most listened to news podcast.

According to data from Roy Morgan, The Saturday Paper nearly doubled its readership during the pandemic, with figures reported from March 2020, 119,000 growing to 224,000, March 2021. Schwartz Media also told Mumbrella its flagship Magazine, The Monthly, has reported a 40% increase in subscriptions since March 2020.

Over the course of her career, Connaughton has also freelanced for publications including Vox, The Age, Noisey, The Australian and was a 2018 Walkley Young Australian Journalist finalist, for her reporting from the Syrian border.

The Saturday Paper was launched in 2014, with Jensen as its founding editor. Schwartz Media also publishes The Monthly.
