Stan funds original film Transfusion starring Sam Worthington

Nine-owned streaming service, Stan, has today announced that original film Transfusion has commenced filming in Sydney earlier this week.

Transfusion is a thriller starring Sam Worthington (Avatar) as Ryan Logan, a former Special Forces operative, who is battling to cope with life after the loss of his wife and is thrust into the criminal underworld to keep his only son from being taken from him.

Sam Worthington to star in Stan’s Original Film, Transfusion.

The film also co-stars Phoebe Tonkin as Justine (Ryan’s wife) and Matt Nable (The Dry) as Johnny; and introduces new talent in Edward Carmody, who plays Billy Logan (Ryan’s son).

Cailah Scobie, chief content officer at Stan, said: “The Stan original film Transfusion is set to be a powerful and thought-provoking Australian thriller. We’re delighted to welcome Matt Nable as actor, writer and director, along with the star-studded cast of Sam Worthington and Phoebe Tonkin. We’re also very pleased to again be working with John Schwarz, Michael Schwarz, and the entire creative team, on another fantastic Stan original project.”

As well as writing and staring, Matt Nable will be making his directorial debut, with John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz producing through their Deeper Water Films banner, while Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, Mike Runagall, Cailah Scobie and Paul Wiegard will also be serving as executive producers.

Last year, Stan revealed it added 9 new productions to its slate for 2020 and announced plans to reach 30 Stan Originals per year in the next 5 years.

Investment from parent company Nine Entertainment Co has allowed the expansion of Stan’s local content, with the entertainment business focusing its own production capabilities towards the future of Stan’s slate.

Nine CEO Mike Sneesby, (previously CEO of Stan) said the platform is focused on growth.

“Stan continues to experience significant growth, reaching a scale that is delivering strong positive cash flow. As part of our strategy to bring the world’s best content to Australians, we will shift greater investment into Stan original productions through our local and international partnerships,” said Sneesby.

“This strategy is further bolstered by Nine’s production capabilities as we maximise the efficiency of our content investment across the group’s market-leading television platforms.”

The Stan Original Film Transfusion will premiere on Stan and in cinemas in 2022.
