Mahalia Barnes re-dubs ‘Simply the Best’ to promote the NRL for Foxtel

Foxtel has unveiled its campaign to market the start of the NRL season, featuring a re-recorded an reworded version of Tina Turner and Jimmy Barnes’ ‘Simply the Best’ by Barnes’ daughter Mahalia Barnes.

The campaign, from Clemenger BBDO Sydney, features the reworked song to highlight what Foxtel says is an obsession with footy, with Fox Sports and Australian talent, including Peter Sterling and Matty Johns, making cameo appearances.

Clemenger BBDO Sydney executive creative director Paul Nagy said in a statement: “I am truly obsessed with NRL on Foxtel – ask anyone and go the Sharkies – so it was great to be a part of this important campaign. Hopefully this tongue-in-cheek take on one of my favourite NRL ads will help others with a similar issue find some comfort and understanding.”

The Chaser’s Andrew Hansen helped write the lyrics for ‘Simply Obsessed’.

Foxtel executive director of sales and marketing Ed Smith said in a statement: “The start of the NRL season is a major event for our subscribers and we wanted to capture the excitement and anticipation of the game in our campaign. Paying tribute to the iconic Tina Turner and Jimmy Barnes song is a fantastic way to trigger the feeling of NRL and kick off the 2014 season.”

The campaign runs across TV, press, outdoor, radio, online display and social media and officially launches on February 16.
