Mahlab wins Zoom’s ANZ PR account

Video chat platform Zoom has appointed Mahlab as its public relations agency across the Australian and New Zealand markets.

The account win has been effective since last month, with Zoom joining a client list that includes Prospa, Salesforce, Australian Human Resources Institute, Comm Sec, Engineers Australia, and Kronos.

Zoom’s head of Australia and Asia Pacific, Michael Chetner, explained that connecting people is the company’s priority and privilege, especially as millions of users turn to the platform to host work meetings, happy hours, games and trivia nights, and family catch-ups during the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We at Zoom feel incredibly privileged to be in a position to help people stay connected at this time,” he said.

“Part of doing this is ensuring that people understand how to use our platform safely and effectively and we’re focused on ensuring we communicate this to people here in Australia, and around the world.”

Mahlab’s head of communications, PR and social, Lily Carlyon – who has held the role since 2018 when the agency launched its PR arm – added: “Zoom has become the world’s go-to solution for staying connected while we’re physically apart and we’re thrilled that we’re able to help it tell this story to people across the region.”

While the company has enjoyed a steep rise in users due to COVID-19 enforced lockdowns – surging from 10m to 200m daily users – it has also struggled to address the security issues that have come along with such a spike.

This week, it launched Zoom 5.0, a new update that includes encryption and privacy controls to combat issues such as ‘Zoom-bombing’, where people enter video gatherings – including Alcoholic Anonymous meetings – uninvited, and disrupt them.
