Mandie van der Merwe and Avish Gordhan join M&C Saatchi Sydney as joint ECDs

M&C Saatchi Sydney has hired creative duo Mandie van der Merwe and Avish Gordhan as joint executive creative directors.

Gordhan and van der Merwe join the agency after a freelancing stint. Prior to their time freelancing the duo were at Cummins&Partners Sydney where they were both creative directors.

The creative duo join from Cummins&Partners

Prior to her three year stint at Cummins&Partners, van der Merwe was an art director at TBWA for two years.

Gordhan was also at TBWA with van der Merwe, however, he was a copywriter. The duo departed TBWA at the same time to join Cummins&Partners.

The new appointments come after a series of big wins for M&C Saatchi.

In December, the agency landed the creative account for Tourism Australia and in the same month, the agency also won TAB’s creative account.

Cam Blackley, chief creative officer at M&C Saatchi, said in a statement: “As we look to flex our creative capability and offer, I couldn’t think of a better, more creative duo to fill the ECD hot seats.

“Mandie and Avish are pure quality. They are lovely, thoughtful, quirky individuals who genuinely care about the work and have a formidable track record in non-traditional thinking.

“Throw group creative director Andy Flemming into the equation and we have the right leaders in place to really make some truly special work in the foreseeable future.”

Gordhan said: “There is an intimidatingly deep pool of creative talent and experience at M&C Saatchi. So to be part of this team, and to build and grow with it, is both very exciting and humbling. I feel invigorated by this opportunity.”

“The first time we met Cam, we knew we loved him. He has a wicked sense of humour and is very generous with his creativity. He is also really articulate about the vision for M&C Saatchi,” van der Merwe added.
