Business Insider editor-in-chief Paul Colgan exits newly merged Pedestrian business

Business Insider’s publisher and editor-in-chief, Paul Colgan, is stepping down after six years.

It comes two months after the merger of Nine and Fairfax Media, which saw Business Insider’s parent company, Allure Media, merge with Pedestrian.

Colgan was the first editor of Business Insider Australia

Last week, Pedestrian announced its new structure as a combined business, appointing Brian Florido as managing director and former head of editorial, Vanessa Lawrence, as publisher. At the time, Pedestrian said Colgan and Pop Sugar’s executive editor, Amandas Bardas, would both remain in their roles, reporting to Lawrence.

Colgan was the first editor of Business Insider Australia, a news brand which has since expanded to more than 15 countries. Prior to joining Business Insider, Colgan spent a decade at News Corp, as digital news director for the network news desk, and as editor of news.com.au.

In a post on Twitter yesterday afternoon, Colgan said it was time for a “fresh challenge”.

“Some personal news: after six amazing years at Business Insider, I’ve decided it’s time for a fresh challenge,” Colgan wrote.

“I’m immensely proud of what the team has achieved – Australia was BI’s first international edition and it’s now in over 15 countries…”

He later told followers the title had a “great future” under the new Nine and Pedestrian structure. It is not clear who will replace him.

Nine – the owner of both Pedestrian and Allure Media – decided to merge the two businesses in December last year, shortly after the acquisition of Fairfax Media. At the time, Allure Media CEO Jason Scott departed the business, and a number of redundancies were made across commercial and editorial. Nine said the redundancies were part of the 92 already flagged .

All staff are being relocated to Pedestrian TV’s offices this month.

Brian Florido, managing director of Pedestrian Group, thanked Colgan for the “phenomenal job” he had done in his time with Business Insider Australia.

“Over the past six years, Paul has been a driving force in forging BI’s place within the Australian media landscape, becoming one of the few global media brands to create a sustainable presence in the local market,” Florido said.

“We’ve enjoyed working alongside Paul to help us transition the site over into the Pedestrian Group family and set the site up for its next stage of growth. While we would have loved to continue working with him we respect his decision to move on to a new challenge and wish him all the best as he prepares to take on the next journey in his career.”
