Masterchef reveals new crop of contestants
Channel Ten’s cooking giant MasterChef has revealed its contestants for the next season.
For the first time, the show will go straight to the final 22, rather than showing the earlier stages of the selection process.
The 22 contestants will be appearing on the show alongside hosts Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Matt Preston. A promo released last Monday suggested the competition would be “boys vs girls” this time around.
The finale of MasterChef: The Professionals brought in 1.02 million viewers last month, coming in ninth in total on the night and second in 16-39 and 18-49 age groups.
The new series, produced by Shine, is being filmed in Melbourne.
I appreciate this is a bit PC and boring but it’s refreshing to see the cooking shows having a good multicultural mix. Same can’t be said for talent programs which (for some reason) remain inherently white (save for the odd Polynesian). Take The Voice as a case in point. Don’t Asian people sing?

What we need is more reality cooking shows. Can we please have more reality cooking shows. Jamie Oliver et al. you have a lot to answer for. You made cooking seem way more interesting than it really is and now fine people everywhere can’t get enough. Sometimes I hear people discussing – insert reality cooking show – in tones that would usually be reserved for major life events like births and deaths. Please tell me all about your soufflé. Tell me!!! End of rant.

Brian, one of the contestants this year is Kiyomi Vella (half Japanese/half Maltese) who is through to the Live Show rounds. There were also an auditioner in last years series I believe from the Philippines, who didn’t make it past the blind auditions.

Have loved the show from a spectator and a commercial viewpoint since it started but I’m finding the promos for this season extremely sexist.
I understand the point of the season is men vs women but must I have infuriating stereotypes from the 1940’s thrown in my face every time I watch channel 10?
If I had children, male or female, I would be shielding them from messages that blatantly suggest they either belong in the kitchen or that with their gender comes the innate ability to handle pressure well… what a load of rubbish!
