M&C Saatchi win top prize at B&T Awards for second year as Carat takes media agency gong
M&C Saatchi picked up the Agency of the Year title for the second year in succession at the B&T Awards on Friday night.
The Sydney agency also won the NSW and Advertising Agency of the Year categories at the ceremony held in Melbourne’s Town Hall. It is the first time an agency has won the top award two years in a row.
Media Agency of the Year was Carat, holding off MEC, The Monkeys were Independent Agency holding off Highly Commended The Hallway, and One Green Bean was PR Agency of the Year.
Leo Burnett Sydney and Melbourne were jointly awarded Interactive Agency of the Year, Cummins & Partners took home VIC Agency and Y&R Group Brisbane the QLD Agency award.
Spotify Australia was Media Brand of the Year, Seven West Media won Sales Team, Asahi Premium Beverages were named Marketing Team and Ikon Communications’ Commonwealth Bank team was named Best Trading Team.

Now, by all means call me a cynic, but sat in my seat watching the Award winners announced I couldn’t help but notice that most of the winners had bought at least a table of ten and in some cases 3 tables of ten.
It may be a coincidence of course, or just confidence of their own work- but surely winners aren’t tipped off in advance to guarantee a solid attendance?

…but there are some pretty odd things here. Asahi Marketing team of the year? Really? How many of them are there….5? And what exactly did they do? I saw a pretty terrible ad earlier in the year, but that is about it. M&C deserved winners. Daylight second.

To anonymous 7dec-M&C won this very same Agency of the Year Award in 2014 so to say ‘Andy has improved the place already’ is not only insulting to his new colleagues but an untruth.

Tom McFarlane is arguably Australia’s most successful CD of the last 20+ years. Not only has he helped build an outstanding business, he’s consistently produced outstanding work across every conceivable category and, in the process, he’s helped grow and mentor more great talent than most other agencies combined. I’m sure James and Andy will do a great job – but, until then, all credit lies with Tom [and Tom] and the fantastic team and culture they alone have built.

Interesting observation.
The saleshouse I have been working at for the past three years might throw some light on this.
We never bought tables to these events even though we were nominated.
Fast forward a year and we’ve got two-three tables of ten people and win at every event we go to, Then suddenly we stop buying tables and wow… we don’t win anymore.
