McCann recruits Darren Spiller as CCO, and replaces Adam Lee with Hazelle Klønhammer

McCann Sydney has appointed Darren Spiller as chief creative officer, and Hazelle Klønhammer as its managing director.

Klønhammer takes over from Adam Lee, who departed McCann Sydney as its managing director in September 2018 after three years in the role.

Previously, Spiller spent five years at DDB Melbourne as its chief creative officer, stepping down in November 2016, and joining Host/Havas in 2017. Spiller left Host/Havas in August 2018 after less than two years as its chief creative officer.

Klønhammer joins after the closure of Ugly, the creative agency she co-founded with Gary McCreadie and Ross Berthinussen, where she was managing director. Prior to the Ugly experiment, Klønhammer spent 20 years in Europe, during which time she led Anomaly Amsterdam, working with clients such as Nike, Converse and Johnnie Walker.

CEO of McCann Australia, Nicole Taylor, who herself only joined McCann one year ago from DDB, said Spiller and Klønhammer are world-class practitioners who feel like family.

“We are aligned on our goals and values and have great respect and appreciation for each other. It’s a privilege to have them join us,” she said.

Spiller added: “There’s nothing more exciting than people like Nic, Fran and Hazelle asking you to come on board and help build and re-invent something. I knew I was going to be in good company with innovative impatient thinkers. All here, all like-minded to make relevant effective work.”

Klønhammer noted McCann was at an interesting crossroads.

“McCann Sydney is at an interesting crossroads, evolving their agency model to be more progressive and with a huge focus on creativity – not just from the creative ‘department’ but across every aspect of the business. I am delighted to be on this journey with them,” she said.

McCann has also announced the departure of executive creative director Jerker Fagerstrom, who has decided to return to Sweden. Fagerstrom was appointed to the role in 2016, after leading the creative team at DDB Stockholm for six years.

Taylor said of Fagerstrom’s departure: “While we are incredibly sad to see Jerker go, we respect his decision to do what is right for his family. We hope to keep Jerker within the IPG network, and are currently looking for suitable roles overseas.”
