McDonald’s dips its toe into swimwear with Budgy Smuggler range

Dr Mumbo is extremely grateful Maccas is encouraging people to keep their “budgies” under wraps this summer.

For nothing screams, “I need to go for a swim right now!”, more than when you have a burger in your hand.

Yes, it’s that time of year again when people who are not Dr Mumbo brave the La Niña downpours (you’re getting wet anyway is the logic), mask up, and head to the beach in their favourite fast-food outlet swimwear.

You see, McDonald’s Australia has partnered with swimwear brand, Budgy Smuggler, to release a new “limited edition” range of swimwear.

And Dr Mumbo is torn over whether the range is as fashionable as our illustrious history of Olympic uniforms.

The merch is available from Saturday, 8 January, and features three prints inspired by McDonalds’ famous burgers and fries.

Dr Mumbo ponders how one might fit one’s burgers and fries into such a skimpy hammock, but that is by the by.

The collection includes the traditional Australian-made male “Smugglers” – plus women need not feel left out, with one-piece and two-piece “Smugglettes” available, as well as bucket hat designs.

It’s all frightfully enticing, thanks chiefly to the models used in the advertising. Dr Mumbo hopes the range encourages wearers to also show off their healthy lifestyles.

McDonald’s Australia senior brand manager Liz Whitbread said the limited-edition Budgy Smuggler range will be available from a mere $55 exclusively at Budgy Smuggler stores and online until stocks last.

And this is where Dr Mumbo feels it could be a hard sell for many Macca’s customers, who are perhaps hoping to haggle down the price of a Happy Meal, or buy off-menu with a coupon.

Whitbread commented: “Whether it’s lounging on one of Australia’s iconic beaches or dipping in and out of the pool, this summer is all about doing things we love with people we love.

“The limited-edition range of swimwear is bold, fun and eye-catching, perfect for enjoying the summer season in style.”

It’s not the first time Dr Mumbo has seen this type of promotion.

Other companies such as fast-food chain Subway and Australian beer company, Victoria Bitter (VB), have also made the dive into the merchandise market in previous years.

Last year, Subway tantalised fans with its launch of its exclusive swimwear range, showing off its prints of the six-inch and foot-long subs. Dr Mumbo feels the sandwich shop missed a beat there.

And, if you had a hard-earned thirst for some beer merch, VB released a swimwear collection back in November 2020 that included briefs for men — budgie smugglers, and one-piece swimmers for women.

Dr Mumbo believes if you’re going to swim for something, it may as well be your favourite brand.

So this summer, don’t wear your art on your sleeve, wear it on your swimmers.

But please … wear sunscreen.
