In February and March this year, comparethemarket.com.au was the most visited Australian site in the health insurance category[1], thanks to the success of the furry meerkat toys Aleksandr Orlov and Sergei. Now, the famous meerkats are back again as a reward to Aussie households.
Aussies who take out health insurance through comparethemarket.com.au between 15 May and 30 June will have the option to claim their meerkat toy, with their choice of the successful businesskat and founder of comparethemeerkat.com.au Aleksandr, or the tea-making, coffee drinking, computermabob expert, Sergei.
The meerkats have garnered a strong following internationally. Aleksandr’s famous catchphrase ‘simples’ – a term used to convey that something is very straightforward[2] – is now so well known that, it has been added to the Oxford Dictionary. In the UK, a meerkat toy was distributed by comparethemarket.com.au’s counterpart every 30 seconds in the last two years. This took Aleksandr’s UK business to second place on the children’s toys chart.
Aleksandr and Sergei are proving to be equally as popular in Australia. There were 96,555 positive reactions to the toy giveaway on social media, where Australians liked, shared and commented on the meerkat toys via Facebook. So far, Aleksandr has proved slightly more popular than Sergei, claiming 58 per cent of total toys handed out in February and March this year.
If the last meerkat toy giveaway was anything to go by, with 97 per cent of customers choosing to claim a meerkat toy, the new giveaway will see the toys delivered to even more Aussie households.
Abigail Koch, spokesperson for comparethemarket.com.au said, “With a choice between Aleksandr and Sergei, Aussies will face a difficult decision when they take out hospital, extras or combined health insurance online or through the comparethemarket.com.au call centre between 15 May and 30 June.”
