Melbourne Cup wins Tuesday ratings with 2.122m tuning in from home to watch the race

Yesterday’s Melbourne Cup Race was watched by 2.122m people on Seven, growing from an audience of 1.390m who had tuned in for the pre-race action in the mounting yard.

The presentation of the Melbourne Cup to jockey Ryan Moore for his win on German horse Protectionist was watched by 1.630m.

While the numbers are all slightly down on last year’s, which saw 2.2m viewers tune in for the race, with 1.8m watching the Cup presentation. However, because OzTam does not measure out of home viewing such as in offices and pubs, it is likely that the number of viewers is underreported.

In regular programming Dancing with the Stars was the second-most watched non-news program of the evening, beaten only by the network’s Home and Away, helping Seven to win the night with an audience share of 20.7 per cent.

Dancing with the Stars, on Seven from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, saw its audience slide on last week, with the show grabbing an audience of 883,000 compared to last week’s audience of 902,000.

The reality show did win its timeslot, beating David Attenborough’s Life on Nine which was watched by 625,000 and Recipe to Riches on Ten which was watched by 545,000, slightly down on last week’s audience of 561,000.

Also on Ten, NCIS, on at 8.30pm, grabbed an audience of 714,000 while NCIS: Los Angeles at 9.30pm was watched by 557,000.

Big Brother, on Nine from 8.40pm, was watched by 578,000. Nine managed an audience share of 17 per cent, with Ten not too far behind on a share of 15.3 per cent. The ABC settled for an audience share of 12.3 per cent.

Meanwhile on the ABC, 7.30 was watched by 729,000 and Kitchen Cabinet on at 8pm featuring Labor leader Bill Shorten attracted an audience of 696,000.

In news, Seven News won the night with an audience of 1.157m at 6pm, dropping away to 1.062m at 6.30pm. Nine News settled for an audience of 943,000 at 6pm and 917,000 viewers at 6.30pm.

Nine claimed second place in the ratings race with an audience share of 17 per cent, while ten was third on 15.3 per cent, and ABC behind on 12.3 per cent.
