Melbourne radio ratings: TripleM topples Gold to top FM as Nova’s stations both go backwards
The Melbourne radio market continues to remain extremely tight with just 0.2 audience share points separating the top three FM stations Kiis 101.1 FM, Gold and Fox FM.
Southern Cross Austereo’s Fox was the biggest overall winner picking up 0.6 share points in total people share and lifting across all timeslots except for evenings, following the return of Hamish Blake and Andy Lee. Nova’s SmoothFM saw a 1.1 percentage point fall in total people, the largest of the survey.
The star duo rocketed to the top of the drive time shows on their return, picking up 1.5 per cent share points to 10.3 per cent, leapfrogging Dave Hughes and Kate Langbroek on Kiss 101.1 FM who also picked up 0.2 in terms of share, taking them to 9.6 per cent.
Nova’s Kate Ritchie, Marty Sheargold and Tim Blackwell with their share staying static at 8.7 per cent, while Merrick Watts on TripleM went backwards by 0.9 points to 7.9 share, and fourth place overall in the FM field.
Macquarie Radio Network’s 3AW remains the dominant market force picking up 0.5 points in overall share to 12.6 per cent, maintaining its 16.5 share in breakfast with Ross and John, although Tom Elliott’s drive show fell back 0.4 to a 9.7 share, second overall behind Hamish and Andy.
In FM breakfast Southern Cross Austereo’s TripleM’s Hot Breakfast team of Eddie McGuire, Mick Molloy and Luke Darcy kept top spot with a 9.3 share, down 0.3, ahead of Australian Radio Network station Gold’s Brig and Lehmo, who dropped 0.2 of the 1.4 point increase from the last survey to post a 7.5 share.
SCA’s Fox breakfast team leapt into third with Fifi Box and Dave Thornton up 0.5 points to 7.3, leapfrogging KiisFM’s breakfast duo Jane Hall and Matt Tilley who slipped 0.1 points to a 7.1 share.
Nova Entertainment stations SmoothFM and Nova were neck and neck again as both slipped 0.7 points to a 5.2 share in breakfast.
While Smooth was down 1.1 points overall Nova dropped 0.2 to 6.1, placing it sixth in the FM ladder.
TripleM toppled Gold in the total people ratings by virtue of losing less listeners, losing 0.1 percentage points to fall to 8.5, while Gold lost 0.3 to fall to 8.4 per cent.

Alex, they are not the top three networks. They are the top three FM stations in Melbourne. Two are owned by the same company. And you ignore the powerhouse AMer 3AW.
Radio ain’t the same as TV. Individual stations that produce most of their own local programming still exist. And, as usual, the AM stations, while winning overall, barely rate a mention in the article.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for flagging – I of course meant the top three FM stations, which it’s been amended to now.
As regards AM – it does get a mention in the article, but inevitably we’re going to lead with the news – ‘nothing’s changed’ isn’t a very interesting news hook.
Cheers,
Alex – editor, Mumbrella
Hi Alex. It seems a bit odd that there is no mention of the ABC stations in your story, particularly 774 ABC Melbourne at No.2. Cheers, Peter.
