Men In Black III topples The Dictator with $5m opening box office weekend

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have returned to the top of the box office charts as galaxy defenders in Men In Black III.

The third installment of the action comedy – which launched the first in the trilogy in 1997 – is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, who also directed the previous two. The film took just over $5m in its first weekend at the box office.

Opening across 592 screens, the film took 5.001m for a screen average of $8,449, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

The secret agents bumped Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator from the number one spot. The Dictator took $2.452m across 344 screens for a screen average of $7,130, taking $9.669m to date.

In third place, The Avengers remained strong in their fifth week taking $2.262m across 480 screens for an $4,714 average. The result takes the comic book heroes to $46.986m and 8th place on the all time box office record, up from tenth place last week and beating out The Dark Knight.

Costume drama Bel Ami, starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Declan Donnellan was released this week by distributor eOne/Hopscotch took $0.264m at the box office and placed 6th.

In limited release, radio program turned live show, This American Life: Live, distributed by Sharmill took $52,483 across 12 screens for a $4,374, while Chinese film Empire of Silver, finished in 2009, took $11,094 across seven screens for a $1,585 average.

Australian film Wish You Were Here remained on top of the limited release table in its fifth week taking $91,349 across 49 screens for a $1,864 screen average.
