Meta’s reported Twitter competitor set to steal Musk’s users: Similarweb

The reported Twitter competitor set to be released by Meta is in prime position to take users leaving Twitter if Meta is able to leverage its Instagram customer base, according to data from Similarweb.

Meta is reportedly set to release an Instagram spinoff that would allow users to make text posts up to 500 characters long with attached links, photos and videos.

The new app will also interoperate with other Twitter competitors like Mastodon to expand the app’s reach. The tech giant has not disputed the reports.

“Meta’s ability to attract users who have been leaving Twitter will depend on how well it will be able to convert Instagram users into users of its forthcoming text posting app – but Instagram’s strong position in the digital world is a great starting point,” Similarweb’s blog post read.

“Instagram has four times more monthly active users than Twitter on Android, and the proportions are similar on iOS.”

Instagram also runs neck-and-neck with Twitter on the web and is growing traffic, while Twitter has also been losing traffic every month so far this year.

“In the first four months of 2023, Twitter’s total web traffic dropped by 5.4%, while its mobile app audience (using monthly active users on Android) dropped by 6.5%,” the blog post read. “Over the same period, Instagram web traffic dropped 2.15% and app users dropped 1.9%.”

Similarweb also said the Instagram spinoff would also make a big impact on distributed social networking services like Mastodon and the Twitter founder Jack Dorsey-backed BlueSky. It added that if Meta chose to embrace a similar open source approach, the new app could be advertised as “open” and “distributed,” while gaining access to a larger audience.
