Michael Nearhos exits NAB as GM of brand experience following restructure

The National Australia Bank has announced an overhaul of its marketing department, which will see general manager of brand experience Michael Nearhos depart the bank and his role made redundant.

Andrew Knott, chief marketing officer at NAB, said in a statement: “Michael has been an outstanding and tireless contributor to NAB, and it is because of his work leading the repositioning of both the NAB and MLC brands that this structural change to NAB marketing is possible.

“NAB More Than Money, NAB AFL Mini Legends, NAB AFL Women’s, MLC Let’s Save Retirement and MLC Life Unchanging campaigns have been highly successful, and Michael should be proud of these achievements.

“Personally, I thank Michael for his friendship, counsel and his passionate focus on NAB’s customers, brands and in our people.”

Nearhos joined NAB in 2013 as its general manager of wealth marketing and was promoted to acting CMO nearly two years later.

After finishing his five month stint as acting CMO, Nearhos was the general manager of NAB brand and product marketing before moving into his most recent GM of brand experience role.

Commenting on his departure, Nearhos said he has enjoyed his five “diverse” years with the bank.

“It’s been a wonderful and diverse five years at NAB. From transforming our brands and communications, to supporting young people and women in sport, I’ve loved leading such a passionate and talented team of people to deliver strong customer, community and business impacts.”

As part of NAB’s new marketing structure, Faycal Ben Abdellaziz, the head of group brand; and Thomas Dobson, the head of media and partnerships, will now report directly into Knott.

Other brand experience teams will now report into members of the NAB marketing leadership team which includes Suzana Ristevski, the general manager of business banking and customer strategy; Karen Ganschow, GM of consumer marketing; and Silpa Haria, head of digital marketing.

“As part of wider organisational change at NAB that began last year, we have made the decision to change the way brand experience is managed at NAB, elevating a number of the brand team as direct reports to the CMO,” Knott added.
