Michelle Gunn appointed editor of The Australian

The Australian has a new editor with The Weekend Australian editor Michelle Gunn adding the title to her remit.

Gunn replaces John Lehmann who will move into a role as commercial director and managing editor for the News Corp Australia title.

Gunn is the first female editor of The Australian in the title’s history

Managing editor Helen Trinca will continue as editor of The Deal and also become associate editor for the paper. Matthew Kitchin has also been announced as national sports editor.

Further editorial changes have taken place across News Corp, including news.com.au deputy editor James Law taking on the role of national editor of NCA Newswire – the internal newswire service the publisher is set to launch next month. Lillian Saleh has been announced as national editor of Network News and Kathy Lipari will take an expanded role as national editor, News360 and commercial editorial across the News Corp network.

Gunn is the first woman to edit the masthead in its 56-year history. She’s been editor of the Weekend Australian since 2012 and is the first person to be appointed editor of both titles. Gunn has worked at News Corp since beginning a cadetship with The Australian.

News Corp underwent a restructure last week, following an announcement that the publisher had ended discussions with Australian Community Media boss Antony Catalano for acquisition of News Corp’s regional titles. Some redundancies were also announced last week, following CEO Michael Miller’s warning early on in the COVID-19 pandemic that some roles wouldn’t survive the pressures.

“I want to assure you that my priority is to preserve as many jobs across the company as possible. But it is now clear that some job losses will be inevitable,” he said.

“Together we need to move quickly to do everything we can to secure the health of our business and retain jobs.”
