Melissa McCarthy film opens with $1.9m, can’t knock out Avengers: Infinity War
Melissa McCarthy’s latest film, Life of the Party, opened at the weekend box office with $1.995m in earnings, but was unable to knock Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War out of the top position.
The film, which also features Modern Family star Julie Bowen, Gillian Jacobs and Debby Ryan sees a mother return to university after her divorce. It ran across 297 screens on its opening weekend.
But Life of the Party opened second to Avengers: Infinity War, which collected an additional $5m at the weekend box office, with 675 screenings.
According to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia report, the film has made $53.707m. On its launch weekend following Anzac Day, it broke box office records.
Australian film Breath dipped in behind Life of the Party, with $727,141 across 242 screens. It is based on a Tim Winton novel.
Amy Schumer’s I Feel Pretty added earnings of $663,537 to its total earnings while The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society made $560,061.
