Melissa McCarthy film opens with $1.9m, can’t knock out Avengers: Infinity War

Melissa McCarthy’s latest film, Life of the Party, opened at the weekend box office with $1.995m in earnings, but was unable to knock Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War out of the top position.

The film, which also features Modern Family star Julie Bowen, Gillian Jacobs and Debby Ryan sees a mother return to university after her divorce. It ran across 297 screens on its opening weekend.

But Life of the Party opened second to Avengers: Infinity War, which collected an additional $5m at the weekend box office, with 675 screenings.
