Mini Darth Vader versus VW Passat
Superbowl – or rather its half time ads – rarely disappoints.
It’s this Monday, Australian time.
This is the best I’ve come across so far of this year’s crop, which has been released ahead of time.
It’s had 2.4m views in the two days since it was uploaded to YouTube.
Fair to assume that most of the budget went to the Star Wars rights.
The agency behind it was Deutsch LA.

Its very cute and accessible and transcends the Star Wars reference. I’ve been sent this at least 10 times in the last couple of days by folks of all ages. If it were a feature film it would be a four-quadrant movie, all demographics love it.

You can start the engine with the remote??? Why? This strange feature wasn’t explained. Cute but confused about the product.

Common on US premium cars, but illegal here. Allows aircon / heater / demister to get going before you get out of the house.
Those who really care, will understand it. Those who don’t, will be intrigued to find out more. Clever, innit.

Thought-starter – VW are also spruiking the new Beetle in the Superbowl using a fun direct metaphor – would the ASB be powerless to complaints about this?
ps – No, I’m not VW PR – it just fits with other auto-related ASB topics.

Thanks for the explanation AdGrunt. Makes sense if you’re in the US. Great ad.

Notice the price? Starting from US$20,000. Just looked at carsales.com.au for the current model and the cheapest was an ex demo for $38,490. Great ad though.

It amuses small children with Star Wars fixations – now there’s a great reason to buy a car…

the remote start feature is mostly for if you live in the snow like we do. I mean serious cold : – 20 degrees etc. you want to warm the engine up before you go driving and wreck your engine, but you also want the car vaguely warm before you go put the kids in it. you can leave it locked and start it up. otherwise if you get the kids in really rugged up, within 5mins they’re sweating like crazy….
