Morning Update: Twitter plays with timelines; The Trump Star Wars mashup is here; Facebook peddles VR to buyers

AdAge: The Inevitable Trump-‘Star Wars’ Mash-up Is Here

Given the current state of “Star Wars” overkill in our culture — every other product these days seems to have a “Star Wars” tie-in, and you can’t watch TV without seeing a cross-promotion for “The Force Awakens” — this video, titled “Darth Trump,” is completely inevitable. Produced by YouTube mash-up geniuses Auralnauts, it was “made with 100% all natural Trump sound bites,” to make it appear that Darth Vader is channeling The Donald. But could it be that all this time Donald Trump, master marketer, has being doing the ultimate “Star Wars” tie-in by channeling Darth Vader?

TechCrunch: Twitter Is Monkeying Around With The Order Of Tweets In Your Timeline

I’ve been told by insiders at Twitter that “nothing is sacred” when it comes to making Twitter “easier to use” and ready to onboard the next few hundred million users that Twitter needs to be a powerhouse in media. The latest tweaks and horsing around have to do with the order of tweets you see in your timeline.

The hallmark of Twitter has been the reverse chronological stream that you see every day with one tweet flowing in after another in order. That’s not what some users are seeing, though.

Adweek: Why Time Chose Angela Merkel as Person of the Year Instead of Donald Trump

Among a field that included Donald Trump and the leader of ISIS, Time surprised many this morning when it named German Chancellor Angela Merkel as its Person of the Year.

“No one was tested the way she was,” explained TIME’s managing editor Nancy Gibbs during the reveal on NBC’s Today show. Gibbs cited Merkel’s work in handling the European economic and refugee crises, as well as her actions in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks. “Over and over again the threat to European security really fell to her,” Gibbs said.

The Guardian: Yahoo scraps Alibaba spin-off plan and explores breaking off core business

Yahoo is scrapping its original plan to spin off its multibillion-dollar stake in China’s Alibaba and will instead explore breaking off the rest of its business into a new company.

The U-turn announced on Wednesday comes after Yahoo’s board met last week to review the proposed Alibaba spin-off, as well as chief executive Marissa Mayer’s stalled attempts to turn around the company.

Campaign: Maurice Lévy: my successor will be named before the end of 2016

The Publicis Groupe’s chief executive Maurice Lévy talks to John Tylee about the thorny issue of succession, the changing industry in 2016, and why he’s not thinking about his legacy – yet.

The new leader of Pubicis Groupe will be named before the end of 2016, although Maurice Lévy could remain in a behind-the-scenes role as a non-executive.

Speaking to Campaign in the wake of a major reorganisation within the world’s third largest marcoms company, the chief executive said an announcement would be made by the year’s end but he would not rule out retaining a link.

Digiday: Facebook’s peddling virtual reality to ad buyers

Facebook has started showing advertisers how Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles will fit into their marketing, and it’s talking more about 360-degree video as a way to experiment with immersive experiences, according to agency sources.

The social network, which bought the VR company last year for $2 billion, has taken its time developing the goggles, and is even more deliberate about discussing the advertising applications of the platform. Oculus is expected to start selling to the general public early next year, and Facebook admits it will take time for such headgear to become household staples.
