MTV capture crowd atmosphere at Big Day Out with their ‘Social Balls’
MTV will capture the atmosphere of the crowd at this year’s Big Day Out tour through capturing footage of performances via cameras and aerials embedded in large “MTV’s Balls” which bounce around the crowds.
The oversized beach balls contain a series of cameras and aerials, filming and streaming content from the event allowing fans who have missed out the chance to enjoy the show from a punters point of view.
MTV Australia and New Zealand director Simon Bates: “With over 1.6 million social connections in Australia and New Zealand and one of the world’s leading social media brands, our goal with MTV’s Balls was to create a new, unique way to engage with audiences across all platforms and generate innovative content that’s fun and sharable.”
The ‘Social Ball’, made in conjunction with The Creative Shop, will be a main feature across the full 2014 Big Day Out tour and has already started in Auckland and the Gold Coast.
They will travel to Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide before finishing up in Perth on February 2.
‘Social Ball’ will be filming performances of a number of bands including The Lumineers, Bluejuice, The Hives, Bliss N Eso, Mac Miller, Primus, Tame Impala and Grouplove.
Bluejuice frontman Jake Stone said in a statement: “MTV has always had massive balls and Bluejuice will be demonstrating similar characteristics during our BDO performances. We look forward to sticking our collective balls in your face at the Big Day Out.”
MTV will also cover the festival tour on air and online. The Big Day Out online takeover includes artist interviews, editorial reviews, photo galleries, punter’s point of view specials and clips and photos from MTV’s Social Balls will be available on the website.
Television viewers can enjoy the Big Day Out from their lounge rooms with the following specials:

did anyone else see the unleashing of the virgin mobile beach balls at the pixies’ gig at the Myer Music Bowl a few years ago?! they were showstoppers – literally. band ceased performance mid-song in front of 12,000 people, stabbed the balls, then resumed. most inappropriate activation i’ve ever seen…

Love it. I guess it allows those who miss out on vomiting in the mosh pit to feel what it’s like…
