Multi-channel 7mate has higher audience share than Ten on Saturday night

One of Seven’s multi-channel offerings, 7mate, secured a larger audience than Network Ten’s primary channel last night.

7mate had 7.8% of the TV viewing audience – thanks largely to the AFL – while Ten had 7.1%. Ten was also beaten by national broadcaster, the ABC, which had a 9.5% audience share.

915,000 people throughout the five metro cities watched the AFL Finals Series match between the Collingwood Magpies and the Greater Western Sydney Giants across Seven and 7mate, making it the most-watched program of the evening.

That, combined with the performance of Seven News (791,000 metro viewers) and pre and post-match AFL programming, gave Seven’s primary channel a 25.7% audience share, and the network an overall share of 39.0%.

Unsurprisingly, Seven’s AFL offering was far more popular in Melbourne, with 513,000 tuning in, compared to Sydney’s 75,000.

The AFL clash had a further 319,000 metro viewers on subscription television offering Fox Footy.

The Rugby League clash between the embattled South Sydney Rabbitohs and the St George Illawarra Dragons over on Nine’s channels had 580,000 metro viewers – 350,000 of whom were from Sydney.

Nine was in second place for the night, with a primary channel share of 19.2% and a network share of 26.5%.

205,000 viewers watched the NRL match on Fox League.

The ABC was in third – but significantly behind its commercial counterparts – with a 9.5% primary channel share and a 14.1% network share.

636,000 metro viewers tuned in to watch its nightly news offering, and its most-watched entertainment offering was The Split with 430,000.

Ten’s audience share once again fell behind the ABC on a night when it didn’t have The Bachelor to boost its audience share, pulling 7.1% of the audience.

Its most-watched program was Ten Eyewitness News with 267,000, while in entertainment, a repeat of Territory Cops had 251,000.

Ten’s network share was 12.4%.

SBS finished the night with a 5.3% share on its primary channel, and 7.9% on a network basis.
