Mumbrella Hangout with Marie Claire editor Jackie Frank
This week’s Mumbrella live video hangout was with the editor of Marie Claire, Jackie Frank.
One of Australia’s most respected magazine editors, Frank has been editing the Pacific Magazines title since its launch in 1995 and has also worked on the UK and US versions of the magazine. She has also been the fashion editor of the US Elle and Mademoiselle publications.
Last month the magazine celebrated the fifth biennial Prix de Marie Claire Awards, which honour the big brands in fashion and beauty locally and internationally.
This is my question for Jackie:
You recently said that “girls on the runway are clothes horses, they’re not women that other women should be aspiring to” (see http://au.news.yahoo.com/today.....smoothies/), do you not agree that by featuring predominantly runway-thin models in your magazine you are actively promoting this ‘clothes horses’ body type as something that women should aspire to? Do you believe that plus sized models have no place in fashion magazines, or on the runway?

Hi Jackie,
Social media is comsidered a ‘game changer’ in the magazine world. Do you see it as a threat to sales or as an opportunity to engage readers in new ways?

Is there any benefit to Marie Claire being part of the Seven West media group?

Hi Jackie,
As a publication that is distributed monthly, with lead times stretching several weeks and months ahead, how do you see magazines and marie claire as maintaining their relevance? Especially with more readers flocking to free online media portals for the same information that your magazine will publish months down the track at a cost to the reader?
