Mumbrellacast: What the High Court’s Facebook ruling means for publishers, and a wrap of R U OK? Day

This week the High Court of Australia ruled media outlets that run Facebook pages are the “publishers” of third-party comments on the platform, dismissing the second round of appeals from the publishers of news outlets including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, Sky News, The Centralian Advocate, and The Bolt Report. So where does this leave the defamation case brought against News Corp and Fairfax (now Nine) by former Don Dale Youth Detention Centre detainee Dylan Voller, and what are the potential consequences for the wider industry?

Former Clemenger BBDO CEO, Nick Garrett, has joined Deloitte Digital, teaming up with Matt Lawson and Adrian Mills as the third partner in Deloitte Creative. Garrett is a former Mumbrella Industry Leader of the Year award winner among multiple other Mumbrella awards won by Clemenger BBDO during his time at the helm. The team chats about why Garret made the move, and what his hire means for Deloitte.

Today is R U OK? Day – a harm prevention initiative founded by adman Gavin Larkin in 2009, which encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives. Mumbrella found out what the industry is doing to support its employees.

Plus, Zanda Wilson chats with Initiative CEO Melissa Fein and national managing director Sam Geer, about the ongoing talent drain facing the marketing industry, how Initiative transformed into a top tier agency and won Mumbrella’s Media Agency of the Year for 2021, and why placing the needs of individual employees creates a culture that breeds success.
