Guardian Australia makes four new hires and two internal appointments

Guardian Australia has made four hires, and is looking to make two more, as it amplifies its state news offering in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

“State news is critical to readers’ lives – especially so amid the ongoing pandemic – yet the limited space on our national front page has restricted our ability to provide it,” said Guardian Australia editor, Lenore Taylor.

“We are really excited about this opportunity to better serve our readers.”

The new hires include:

  • Conal Hanna as associate editor (state news). Conal will be leading Guardian Australia’s state news expansion, establishing and editing the three new containers in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
  • Tamsin Rose as NSW state reporter.
  • Benita Kolovos as Victoria state correspondent.
  • Adeshola Ore as Victoria reporter.

Guardian Australia is also looking to hire two political and general reporters for the Queensland reporting team.

In addition to the new hires, Guardian Australia has made two internal appointments. Ben Smee has been appointed Queensland state correspondent, and Michael McGowan has been appointed NSW state correspondent.

Social media threat to Australian election underlined in new parliamentary report

Australia’s democracy is not immune to election meddling, says Reset Australia, as a new parliamentary report underlines the significant risk social media poses and establishes the need for greater transparency.

The local think tank of the global initiative tackling digital threats to society said the report from the Select Committee on Foreign Interference through Social Media is right to raise the alarm and to call for greater government oversight over social media’s role in elections.

Shoppers crave in-store technology that mimics their online experience: report

Key Australian survey highlights include:

  • Shoppers want in-store tech that provides them with UGC: When consumers were asked what technologies they would like to see integrated into the in-store experience, virtual displays showing other customers’ reviews, photos, and videos (31%), QR codes that can be scanned to read reviews (35%), and availability of live/up-to-date star ratings in-store based on customer feedback (35%) were three of the most popular answers. Retailers are listening, with more than two thirds of Australian brands and retailers (74%) saying they have planned to invest in experiential retail, or will include this in their strategy, over the next three years.
  • In fact, consumers expect to see UGC everywhere they shop: 60% of global consumers want to see UGC on brand and retail websites and social channels, while a third want them displayed virtually in-store
  • Shoppers say their peers are the best influencers: UGC-displaying technology makes sense, as Australian consumers said that written reviews (49%) and photo or video content from fellow consumers (27%) are the two types of content they find most influential when used by brands or retailers.
  • Sellers agree: Australian brands and retailers also ranked reviews (59%) and customer photo and video content (39%) as the most influential elements of their sales and advertising efforts. Both Australian consumers (8%) and brands and retailers (14%) ranked celebrity endorsements last.

Source: Bazaarvoice, Inc., provides product reviews and user-generated content (UGC) solutions, announced the results of its newest study, “The State of Retail Report.” The research is based on survey responses of over 8,000 consumers from the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Australia, and Canada, and over 500 decision makers who work in retail from the same countries.
