Music and pop culture publisher NME launches monthly print magazine

Music and pop culture publisher NME has launched a monthly print magazine, with the first issue to be released in May.

The announcement of the print product follows yesterday’s news that Bauer would be making 70 redundancies and suspending a number of print magazines due to the revenue toll COVID-19 is taking.

Yet despite the impacts COVID-19 continues to have on the local magazine, and wider media, industry, NME said “there’s no better time than now” to launch.

“Since the launch of our NME Australia site in December 2019, we’ve seen huge interest from fans, artists and the music industry, with half a million monthly Australian readers visiting NME.com/Australia for their music and pop culture fix,” CEO of Bandlab Technologies, Meng Ru Kuok, said.

“While the print edition in the UK is still on hiatus, we decided there was nowhere better to re-introduce print than Australia. It’s a big country with one of the most dynamic music scenes in the world right now, and of course, there’s no better time than now, when people are seeking compelling content, engaging news and home-based entertainment.”

The business launched NME.com/Australia in December, and added Australia-exclusive award categories at February’s 2020 NME Awards.

The new print magazine – the first issue of which is now available for pre-order – will include interviews, reviews and essays on topics such as music, movies, TV and gaming. A local team of writers will be supported by Singapore and London-based editorial teams.

Australian musician Tash Sultana will feature on the inaugural cover, and said they are “stoked” with the honour.

“Honestly I just can’t wait to give a copy of the issue to my mum and to my grandparents. I know my pa will be showing it all over the retirement village, some could even say he thinks he’s a rockstar now.”
