My Kitchen Rules tops ratings on return as I’m a Celebrity beats Australia’s Got Talent

Channel Seven’s ratings juggernaut My Kitchen Rules returned for its seventh series last night with an audience of 1.576m, an almost identical launch audience to last year’s series.

Its return overshadowed Shane Warne’s entry into Channel Ten’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here camp, which went from 1.3m viewers on Sunday’s launch to 927,000 last night. It is well up on last year’s second show which slipped to 755,000 viewers.

However it trounced the return of Australia’s Got Talent on Nine, which could only manage 785,000 in the 7.30pm timeslot against its reality rivals, its lowest debut ever and well down on the 1.081m it managed on its debut on Nine in 2014.

Ten also saw a drop in audience for the second episode of its delayed transmission of The X-Files with 774,000 viewers in the 9pm slot compared to 909,000 on Sunday.

Nine also brought back reality dating show Farmer Wants a Wife in the 8.55pm slot, managing 763,000 viewers, beating Media Watch (723,000) and Q&A (561,000) on their return to ABC.

The ABC’s other shows performed well with Australian Story at 8pm managing 857,000 metro viewers according to OzTam overnight ratings, and Four Corners netting 808,000 viewers at 8.30pm.

Seven also scored a win in the news hour with its 6.30pm bulletin and Today Tonight segment getting 1.095m viewers, and its 6pm bulletin getting 1.085m. Nine News at 6.30pm had 1.058m and the 6pm bulletin had 1.04m.

MKR’s return gave Seven a whopping win in terms of audience share with 25% for its main channel, ahead of Nine on 19% and Ten on 15.9%, while ABC had 14.9%.
