Nando’s to donate $500,000 to Foodbank

Nando’s will donate $500,000 – the cost of one million meals – to Foodbank in a winter initiative.

The announcement:

The challenging start to 2020 has created not just a health and environmental crisis, but also an unprecedented food crisis in Australia. People who may have previously donated to relief organisations are now the ones seeking support for the first time ever.

According to the 2019 Australia Giving Report, more than half (54%) of people in Australia give because they care about the cause. As consumers consider their spending habits, purpose-led brands are front of mind as they allow customers to do their bit whilst making everyday purchases.

This winter, every time Aussies tuck into their favourite Nando’s meal over the value of $15, they are automatically helping feed one of the many vulnerable Australians Foodbank support.

Nando’s has set the ambitious goal of donating the cost of 1 million meals to Foodbank by the end of the season, which translates to a whopping $500,000 contribution to Foodbank’s national food relief effort.

Whether people opt for lemon and herb, mild or hot, choose to order the same meal every time or mix it up, they will be directly helping support someone dealing with food insecurity.

Nando’s Community Partnerships and Marketing Director, Helen Reece said: “In just four weeks, the initiative has already seen 618,012 meals provided to vulnerable Australians in need. Our customers have really come to the table by ordering their favourite dishes and we hope this momentum continues throughout the winter months. It’s incredible to see how keen people are to get behind purpose led brands and give generously to causes they care about.”

Foodbank provides food relief to over 815,000 people each month and this number is growing rapidly. The recent impact of COVID-19 has increased the number of people seeking food relief by a staggering 78 per cent.

Foodbank CEO Brianna Casey said: “One in five Australians have experienced food insecurity at some point in the last 12 months and this number is unfortunately on the rise in the current climate. The support from brands such as Nando’s is vital in ensuring we can continue keeping up with the increased demand the pandemic has caused for vulnerable people requiring essential food relief.

What we love about this initiative is that you don’t have to do anything different to donate – Aussies can just keep enjoying their favourite Nando’s lunch, dinner or snack while also helping vulnerable Australians,” Brianna said.

Simply by purchasing a $15 feed, Aussies will be helping Nando’s feed someone vulnerable by donating a meal to Foodbank. Some of the ways to give back by chowing down include:

  • Better for you options:
    • Superfuel salad with chicken tenders
    • Haloumi wrap, side salad
  • Treat yo’ self suggestions:
    • Supremo burger, PERi-PERi chips, Mt Franklin water
    • Classic burger, PERi-PERi chips, Coke
    • Veggie burger, PERi-PERi chips, Mt Franklin water
  • Clean eats:
    • 1/2 chicken, regular side salad, Mt Franklin water
  • Iso mates feast:
    • Classic wrap, corn on the cob, Chicken BLAT burger, 1/4 chicken, regular side salad, whole chicken, PERinaise

The initiative is valid at all Nando’s restaurants nationally, for takeaway, delivery and dine in where available and will end once Nando’s has donated $500,000.
