NBA star LeBron James stars in new campaign for Sprite
NBA legend LeBron James has starred in the new campaign for Sprite.
In the ad James declares he’s not going to tell you to drink a Sprite, no matter the predicament you find yourself in, and despite his cue card for the campaign insisting he delivers the line.
Instead, he is going to ask ‘Wanna Sprite?’
The campaign seeks to encourage fans to “stay true to their love of the brand when they are looking for a hit of refreshment”.
Wieden and Kennedy out of the US and Ogilvy in Australia were behind the new campaign.
Sprite brand manager, Charlotte McCrudden, said she was excited to bring the campaign to Australia.
“LeBron James is global super star and we are very excited to be able to premiere our ‘Wanna Sprite?’ spot here in Australia for the first time,” she said.
“With summer just around the corner, we have timed the launch in Australia with the aim of keeping Sprite top of mind for consumers when they are looking for a great tasting hit of lemon-lime refreshment over the hotter months.”
The campaign is set to run across television, cinema, online video and social media until the end of the year.

Why does every single ad in the states use that same breaking the fourth wall / ironic use of hard-sell dialogue / we all know this is an ad type execution? It’s actually insane how many consumer brands use this over there. Watching US sport drives me insane watching them over and over in the breaks.

I wonder if they did any research on his recognition and credibility in Australia? I certainly had no idea who he was from the ads. I suspect that it might have been far more cost-effective to do the ad with an anonymous actor.
