New Deadpool film knocks Avengers: Infinity War out of box office top spot

20th Century Fox’s newest film featuring Marvel Comics superhero Deadpool achieved more than $12m in earnings over the weekend, taking over from Avengers: Infinity War as Australia’s most popular movie.

Deadpool 2, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin and New Zealander Julian Dennison, took $12.619m across 602 screens on its first weekend at the Australian box office.

Reynolds plays Wade Wilson, an everyday man turned superhero, doing battle with time-traveling mutant, Cable.

The film it didn’t earn as much as the first Deadpool, which made $15m on its first weekend. 

According to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia report, Deadpool 2 took $10m more than Avengers over the weekend. Avengers, which stars the majority of Marvel’s other superheroes, made an additional $2.358m across 481 screens.

Since its premiere, it has taken $57.228m.

Making just under $1m in earnings this week was Life Of The Party, starring Melissa McCarthy. The film entered its second weekend at box office with $885,503 in earnings, half of its opening weekend’s $1.995m.

The Tim Winton novel adaptation Breath added almost $400,000 to its total earnings and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society made an extra $326,790.
