New Dwayne Johnson film Rampage collects more than $3m in earnings on first weekend

Dwayne Johnson’s newest film Rampage topped Australia’s weekend box office, with $3.038m in earnings across 469 screens.

Directed by Brad Peyton, Rampage tells the story of a primatologist, played by Johnson, who must save the world from three animals infected with a dangerous pathogen.

It outdid Sony’s Peter Rabbit, which colected an additional $2.522m over the weekend across 439 screens. The weekend success brings the film’s total to $19.235m.

Paramount’s new thriller, A Quiet Place, made $2.362m on its second weekend at the Australian box office. The film stars Emily Blunt and ran across 282 screens. The film topped the US box office upon debut. In Australia, it pulled in $2.42m on its local weekend debut for Paramount, leaving it in third place.

Ready Player One added almost $2m to its local box office earnings over the weekend, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia report.

Meanwhile, American comedy Blockers collected $1.142m over the weekend, bringing the movie’s total to $8.659m.
