Dr Mumbo

New Idea continues to celebrate its fairytale scoop, unironically

Regular readers may recall that New Idea achieved a scoop over the Royal conception, based on the stopped-clock-is-right-twice-a-day school of journalism.

So Dr Mumbo salutes the magazine for its un-ironic press release issued today:

new ideaFriday 7 December, 2012: Three weeks ago, New Idea scooped the world’s media with the exclusive news that Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, and her husband Prince William are expecting their first child.

Now, following the Palace’s official confirmation, New Idea presents a special commemorative issue – on sale from Friday across most of the Eastern seaboard – revealing all the drama and joy in 12 pages of beautiful photos and fascinating interviews.

Only New Idea has the full inside story on the royal pregnancy, including an exclusive new interview with the duchess’ oldest friend Jessica Hay. She first revealed the baby news to New Idea in our November 26 issue – a story that has been widely acknowledged and quoted by major international news outlets including CNN, The Huffington Post and New York Magazine.

This week, Jessica reveals fascinating new details of the story that has captivated the world – right down to how the duchess discovered the news and likely picks for baby names. New Idea also draws on its access to Britain’s finest royal reporters, including Ingrid Seward (editor-inchief of Majesty magazine for more than 20 years), respected royal author Robert Jobson and esteemed royal journalist Phil Dampier.

‘It’s a fairytale ending to the Queen’s Jubilee year,’ says Kim Wilson, Editor-in-Chief of New Idea. ‘We’re delighted to be celebrating this lovely and historic news with our readers.’

New Idea’s special collector’s edition is the magazine’s biggest issue of the year. The issue will be on sale across most of the Eastern seaboard today and nationwide from Monday.

What on earth can the “widely acknowledged” angle have been to the story?
