New Idea continues to celebrate its fairytale scoop, unironically
Regular readers may recall that New Idea achieved a scoop over the Royal conception, based on the stopped-clock-is-right-twice-a-day school of journalism.
So Dr Mumbo salutes the magazine for its un-ironic press release issued today:
Friday 7 December, 2012: Three weeks ago, New Idea scooped the world’s media with the exclusive news that Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, and her husband Prince William are expecting their first child.
Now, following the Palace’s official confirmation, New Idea presents a special commemorative issue – on sale from Friday across most of the Eastern seaboard – revealing all the drama and joy in 12 pages of beautiful photos and fascinating interviews.
What about the fact they got the story right by using a named source with undeniable connections to Kate?
No amount of bitchiness and sour grapes will ever make that fact go away.
Me – they also got the story wrong about five times.
I could splash a magazine saying ‘KIM KARDASHIAN IS PREGNANT!’ every four months and eventually be right one of these days (probably).
More sour grapes than a bad season in the Barossa.
A bit like religious loons predicting the end of the world – keep saying it and eventually it will be true.
The salient point to make here is that New Idea has so discredited itself in the past with “truth-economical” headlines that nobody actually believed the Nov 26 story. I mean, it wasn’t picked up by any other media outlet as a breaking story.
How sad is it to have a ‘scoop’ that nobody believes?
