New Infinite Dial data confirms vast reach of digital audio, continuing dominance of radio

Almost eight in ten Australians aged over 12 listened to radio every week in 2023, according to the latest Infinite Dial research, as the industry remains optimistic about the medium’s listenership.

The research, a preview of which was first presented at Mumbrella Audioland earlier this year, mirrored a Infinite Dial US report and was sponsored by Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA), LiSTNR and Triton Digital locally.

It found that about 18 million Australians, or 81% of the total population aged over 12, listened to digital audio monthly in 2023, up from 78% last year. Digital audio listening is defined as AM, FM and DAB+ radio stations listened through online, podcasts and music streaming services.

Meanwhile, approximately one-in-10 Aussies aged over 12 listen to a podcast every day, and weekly podcast listeners average five episodes per week.

Radio listening in the car has remained the top digital audio choice, with 84% of those aged over 18 who have been in a vehicle in the past month saying that they listen to the radio.

DAB+ stations have tripled their audience since 2020, driven by a wider variety of content and widespread access in new cars. This year, DAB+ listening soared to 7 million people a week, or 32% of people aged over 12, up from 18% last year, and 10% in 2020.

“Digital audio listening in Australia is going from strength to strength, led by booming digital radio and podcast listening and underpinned by radio’s continued resilience and popularity,” Ford Ennals, CEO of CRA said.

“The Infinite Dial 2023 Australia study shows that Australia’s love of podcasts continues to grow. The country has become a global leader in podcast monthly listening. The growth is fuelled by the strength and breadth of Australian content and the popularity of podcasts from broadcast radio.”

“These findings underscore the industry’s ability to adapt and innovate, providing diverse and compelling audio content for listeners,” said Edison Research president, Larry Rosin.
