New York Post goes west with daily California Post newspaper

The New York Post, America’s longest running print newspaper, is launching a West Coast version of its daily paper, and its editor-in-chief will be an Australian.

The California Post will be based in Los Angeles, and will be operated by the New York Post Media Group — a subsidiary of News Corp.

Much like the New York Post, the publication will comprise of a digital publication as well as a daily print edition. According to a statement from News Corp, LA houses the largest audience for the Post’s online version outside of New York, with 3.5 million monthly unique visitors from the city, and 7.3 million in the state of California.

The West Coast edition will feature the same mix of local gossip, news, sports reporting, and entertainment news – with a local angle. It will include break-out sections Page Six and Decider.

Editor-in-chief of the California Post will be Nick Papps, current weekend editor at the Herald Sun in Australia.

“This is the next manifestation of our national brand,” said New York Post editor-in-chief Keith Poole in a statement.

“California is the most populous state in the country, and is the epicenter of entertainment, the AI revolution and advanced manufacturing — not to mention a sports powerhouse.

“With The California Post, we will bring a common-sense, issue-based approach to metropolitan journalism.”

News Corp CEO said in a statement: “There is no doubt that The Post will play a crucial role in engaging and enlightening readers, who are starved of serious reporting and puckish wit.”

California has lost one-third of its newspapers over the past 20 years, according to a 2023 State of Local News report, cited by CNN. The California Post will go some way to addressing this shortfall, as well as competing with the glut of gossip-based entertainment sites like TMZ and Variety, which operate out of the state.
