News Corp appoints Chris Jones as The Courier Mail editor, with Jenna Cairney taking over at The Mercury

The editorial shuffle at News Corp has continued, with current editor of The Mercury in Hobart, Chris Jones, filling the void at The Courier Mail.

Taking Jones’ place at The Mercury will be Jenna Cairney, currently editor of the Townsville Bulletin.

The moves follow Sam Weir vacating the editor position at The Courier Mail to take over at Melbourne’s Herald Sun. The Herald Sun had been edited by Damon Johnston who moved across to The Australian to be its Victorian editor.

The new editor for the Townsville Bulletin will be announced shortly, News Corp said.

Michael Miller, executive chairman of News Corp Australasia, said Jones and Cairney were both outstanding editors with records of positioning their mastheads for growth.

“Chris is an editor whose campaigning for good has struck a chord with the Tasmanian community, and his knowledge of Queensland will be invaluable in his new role,” Miller said.

“Jenna has proven herself as an editorial leader who understands and engages her local community, and she will prove to be a strong advocate for Tasmanians on the issues that matter to them.”

Jones has worked at The Courier Mail previously, both as managing editor of its website, and executive editor of The Courier Mail and The Sunday Mail.

Cairney has done various regional stints with News Corp, editing the Townsville Bulletin for the past two years, and editing the Sunshine Coast Daily in 2015.

The new roles are effective from 13 January.
