News Corp launches online-only Canberra local publication

News Corp has announced the launch of a Canberra local online-only title.

The Canberra Star will launch mid-June 2019 and comes shortly after the launch of The St George Shire Standard and The Illawarra Star, all of which form part of News’ local titles.

The title will focus on local Canberra news, issues and views, said a News Corp spokesperson.

“Following the recent success of our two new online news brands, The St George Shire Standard and The Illawarra Star, we will be launching a local news site for Canberra readers next month,” said the spokesperson.

“It will focus on local news and local people, giving Canberra a trusted, true local news source dedicated to the local, important, everyday issues that matter the most to the local community.”

The move comes as ex-Domain boss Antony Catalano purchased Nine’s regional print portfolio, including The Canberra Times.

The Canberra Star will add competition to a market which was previously relatively small.

The launch also comes as News Corp has sold its remaining stake in the WA-based Community Newspaper Group to Seven, and opened a new agriculture-focused glossy title, AgJournal.
