News Corp makes 23 staff redundant across metro, regional and community titles

News Corp has made another 23 of its staff redundant across a number of its metro, regional and community news titles, according to the MEAA.

In the union’s newsletter from 19 April, the redundancies were made “following an international directive to cut staff and appease shareholders”.

“MEAA delegates are advocating on behalf of members, to ensure that all redundancies are genuine and paid fairly, and that members are treated with the respect they deserve,” the newsletter read.

The redundancies are the latest to come out of News Corp’s ongoing restructure, which is expected to see up to 200 people depart as the company shifts its strategy from focusing on increasing subscribers to reducing churn.

As reported by the Australian Financial Review in March, News Corp is also reportedly testing merging The Daily Telegraph with its New South Wales network of community news journalists, NewsLocal.

The pilot has also resulted in some job cuts in areas such as Cairns, Canberra, Blacktown and Geelong, and some 100 regional journalists and editors have reportedly been informed their jobs may be at risk as part of the cost-cutting drive.
