News Corp senior journalist Anthony Sharwood has joined the newly launched local version of The Huffington Post as chief sports reporter, Mumbrella understands.

It is the latest editorial hire for the online publisher which went on a hiring blitz earlier this year ahead of the site’s launch this week.

Sharwood worked with HuffPost editor-in-chief Tory Maguire at News Corp’s now defunct opinion site The Punch. Most recently he has covered a mixture of sports, news and weather for News Corp’s news.com.au.

Before launch the publisher had secured a number of staff to work under Tory Maguire who heads up the editorial side of the operation and Chris Janz who lead’s the commercial operations.

Sharwood joins news editors Chris Paine and Nicolette Logue, head of video Tom Compagnoni, political editor Karen Barlow, lifestyle editor Leigh Campbell, associated lifestyle editor Emily Blatchford, blog editor Chris Harrison, engagement editor Amie Rigas and associate video editor Emily Verdouw.

HuffPoThe Huffington Post’s Australia site went live on Tuesday this week, a day ahead of the site’s official launch on Wednesday when it then named Nine’s Today Show co-host Lisa Wilkinson as editor-at-large.

Speaking to Mumbrella on Wednesday Maguire said Wilkinson as editor-at-large would help shape the tone and help promote the site.

“Of all the people in the Australian media market Lisa Wilkinson has an unparalleled combination of credibility and profile,” she said.

“She has decades of experience in building an audience, in understanding what an audience wants and catering to them instead of telling them what they need and obviously she has a great reputation, a high social media profile and she’s absolutely the perfect person for this role.”
