News, entertainment, and AFL combine to give Seven a comfortable Friday night win

Seven has comfortably won the Friday night TV ratings, taking out a primary channel share of 22.9% ahead of Nine’s 15.7% thanks to its news, entertainment and AFL offering.

The network’s AFL coverage came in ahead of Nine’s Women’s State of Origin, with 582,000 metro viewers compared to 384,000. 81,000 Sydneysiders, 86,000 Adelaidians and 328,000 Melburnians watched the Sydney Swans beat the Hawthorn Hawks on Seven.

Meanwhile, in the NSW vs Queensland Women’s Origin matchup, 211,000 Sydney viewers and 141,000 in Brisbane tuned in to see NSW defeat Queensland 14-4.

Seven also captured the key advertising demographics, with the news and AFL taking out the top three metro and national spots for the 18-49 and 25-54 brackets.

Seven’s Better Homes and Garden’s was the most-watched entertainment show of the evening, with 597,000 metro viewers, followed by The Chase Australia with 587,000, also on Seven.

Seven News was the most-watched program, with 942,000 metro viewers in the first half and 853,000 in the second, which airs as Today Tonight in some markets. When combined with national numbers, the halves pulled 1.461m and 1.323m respectively.

Nine News saw 822,000 metro viewers tune in to the first half (jumping to 1.092m nationally) and 790,000 for the 6:30pm slot (1.065m nationally). A Current Affair and Hot Seat followed, with 622,000 and 505,000 metro viewers respectively.

ABC News had 567,000 metro viewers (851,000 total), while British detective drama Endeavour performed well for the national broadcaster, with 535,000 metro and 826,000 national viewers in the 8:30pm slot. Gardening Australia pulled 444,000 metro viewers and 707,000 nationally.

Ten’s Graham Norton Show was the network’s best-watched, with 433,000 metro viewers, followed by The Living Room with 404,000.

Earlier in the day, Seven’s breakfast offering, Sunrise, finished with 271,000 metro viewers, while Nine’s Today pulled 206,000.

The ABC was next in line after Seven and Nine for total audience share, with 14.0%, followed by Ten (11/5%) and SBS (3.8%).

On a network level, with the addition of multi-channels, Seven Network was also victorious, with 35.1%, thanks to the strong performance of 7Mate (5.2%), and 7Two (3.5%).
