It is unclear where McGregor is headed.

Murdoch first joined the industry body – which represents the interests of Fairfax Media, News Corp and Seven West Media – almost five years ago.

Prior to NewsMediaWorks, Murdoch held a number of content and marketing roles across Ooh Media, Eye Corp Media and Southern Cross Austereo.

“Charlie leaves NewsMediaWorks after 5 highly productive years as marketing director,” NewsMediaWorks CEO Peter Miller told Mumbrella.

“He has been an enthusiastic and effective torch-bearer for proper news media that civil society and advertisers rely on.  I am looking forward to doing deals with him!”

His appointment comes two months after the announcement Tony Phillips, News Corp’s chief marketing officer, would depart the business.

Due to changes within News Corp’s group marketing division,Murdoch will report directly into managing director of national sales, Lou Barrett. Both trade marketing and creative services teams will now report into Barrett.

“We are thrilled to welcome a Media executive of Charlie’s calibre into this vital role and know that his experience, talent and strategic vision will ensure we deliver our bold ambitions for a redefined and reimagined trade marketing capability,” Barrett said.

“Charlie is an exceptionally talented Media professional and the insights and Ricci understanding of Media he brings to this role will help transform and elevate how we communicate who we are and how we deliver for the Australian market.  I’m delighted he has accepted this role and look forward to working together as we build the future showcase of News Corp Australia.”

At the same time, News Corp is establishing ‘Centres of Excellence’ for marketing. Customer marketing, led by Brendan Collogan, will handle customer acqusition, retention and rewards as well as sports and wagering. Ben Keating will lead retail sales, which is made up of field force, national marketing and network consolidation.

Marketing Communications and Creative Services, led by Bettina Brown, will include marketing communications, creative services and media buying while head of market research, led by Heather White, will report to the CMO to provide consumer insight.

There are two vacant spots at present, a head future consumer revenue growth and a customer strategy manager.

All changes are effective from August 28.
