Nine chops Nightline
Nine has axed its late night news show Nightline after 18 years because it was failing to deliver ratings.
Presenter Kellie Connolly will also lose her job. Mark Calvert, Nine’s Director of News and Current Affairs, said:
“We’re proud of what the Nightline team has produced, and hold Kellie in high regard. The program had a loyal audience, but a small one. The reality of our business is that we have to aim our firepower at those times of the day when people are watching in significant numbers.
“We’re actually investing more money in news and current affairs. We’ll be spending more than we ever have on our federal election coverage, we’re opening a new London bureau to strengthen our coverage across Europe and the Middle East, and we’re hiring additional staff across the department.”
Nighline is currently off the air because of Nine’s coverage of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. The network will continue to run late night news bulletins but without a star presenter.
The unrelenting pursuit of quality at nine continues.
Maybe they should replace it with station promo’s in 3D.

It was simply a repeat of the 6pm news at a time most of us were tucked up in bed. It was hardly breaking new ground. If you want news, at that hour, everyone’s watching Leigh or Tony on 2.

I wonder what else Nine can do to sabotage themselves. It sames they are relentless in their pursuit of quantity over quality, and their even failing at that.

Kerry Packer, for all of his failings, ran a channel with far more integrity and quality than this mob. Now just repeat that sentence again and you begin to understand the nadir that the FTAs have reached.

Seems a shame that Nightline is axed and the appalling A Current Affair is still on air, taking up valuable prime time space.

Guess ch 9 just ran out of ‘celebrity’ news content. Could never understand how what some high profile drunk in the U.S. was doing or why an even lesser known Australian ‘name’s’ antics warranted time in a ‘news’ broadcast.
Had been waiting for Richard Wilkins to start reading the Ch9 news anyway.
Turn on the radio or switch to ABC or SBS for what’s actually happening outside our Aussie bubble.
