Nine launches 9News mobile app with geo-location technology

Nine has launched a new free app with geo-location technology and a focus on video streaming.

The new app will include stories from Nine News globally, as well as from The Today Show, A Current Affair, 60 Minutes, Wide World of Sports, TheFix and 9Finance.

Like 9News’ new website, the app will have a strong video focus

Users will be able to receive news and weather from their local area based on their device’s location.

Josie MacRae, Nine’s head of news digital said the geolocation functionality will allow Nine to send news alerts to specific geographic areas.

“Our new 9News mobile app represents a major step forward and gives us the ability to deliver breaking news – with high-quality video led content – into the hands of hundreds of thousands of people at a moment’s notice,” MacRae said.

It follows the relaunch of 9news.com.au in June, which was also focused on mobile and video as well as targeting news based on geographical location.

At the time of the website’s revamp MacRae said the new website would provide new opportunities for advertisers, pointing to the increased importance of pre-roll ads: “We are going out into market now, looking at areas around sponsored content, we are looking at areas around sponsorship of segments of what we are doing around the site.”

She added: “We know that advertisers want video and we’re incredibly well positioned to provide it. We have our own video, we create our own video, we have hundreds of cameramen across the country every day in every market that are out there filming our video. We are in an amazing position going forward so we actually have the asset that everybody wants.”

The new app would be supported by an on-air promotional campaign encouraging Australians to download it for an improved video and geo-location experience.
